Born on 07 Aug 1927, Gen Somanna joined 11 Gorkha Rifles on 11 Dec 1949 and was the first Adjutant of 3/11 Gorkha Rifles. Later, he was transferred to Brigade of the Guards and commanded 4 Guards. He has had prestigious command and staff assignments like DMO in Army HQ, GOC 3 Inf Div (Ladakh), GOC 11 Corps (Jalandar), DGMO in Army HQ and the Deputy Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army.
Even after joining the Guards, he remained in constant touch with 11 Gorkha Rifles and became a Life Member of 11 Gorkha Rifles Welfare Association. His contemporaries in the Regiment; Veterans Lt Gen Sushil Kumar PVSM; Maj Gen Rajendra Nath, PVSM and Veteran Colonels K Ajit Singh and BS Grewal remember him with reverence. On his 90th Birthday, 11 Gorkha Rifles had sent a delegation to his home to present the traditional photo frame on behalf of Gen Bipin Rawat and all members of 11 GR Welfare Association.
Even after his retirement from service, he has been quite active. In 2017, he had invited Gen Bipin Rawat, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, YSM, SM, VSM, ADC, the then COAS, to unveil the statues of Field Marshal Cariappa and General Thimayya. Gen Somanna had also been instrumental in creating Thimayya Museum. He was a great soldier and a gentleman who always led from the front. The void created due to his demise would be difficult to fill.
